Gewandhausorchester European Tour Featuring Smyth, Tchaikovsky, and Dvořák
Andris Nelsons leads the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig on a European tour this November, showcasing symphonic masterworks by Dame Ethel Smyth, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and Antonín Dvořák.
The program opens with the atmospheric Prelude to Act II (“On the Cliffs of Cornwall”) from Smyth’s 1906 opera The Wreckers. Steeped in brooding coastal imagery, the prelude conjures an aura of mystery and elemental tension that foreshadows the opera’s turbulent drama. Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Fantasy Overture Romeo and Juliet follows. Nelsons concludes the concert with Antonín Dvořák’s monumental Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 (“From the New World”), a touchstone of the Romantic repertoire brimming with nostalgia and yearning for home.
The tour launches in Leipzig with performances on Thursday, November 12 and Friday, November 13 in the Main Hall (Großer Saal) of the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig. Nelsons and the ensemble then travel west for an appearance at the Kölner Philharmonie on Wednesday, November 18, before arriving in Austria for a performance in the Golden Hall of the Wiener Musikverein on Wednesday, November 25.
