Andris Nelsons has joined forces with the Wiener Philharmoniker to record Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony for Deutsche Grammophon. The release of their new album marks the start of the Yellow Label’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth in 2020.

It's been thirty years since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the divide between East and West Germany. The anniversary was marked this week at Symphony Hall, where a German orchestra conducted by the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Andris Nelsons performed two shows commemorating the "Peaceful Revolution” leading up to that event. The shows were part of the second “Leipzig Week” in Boston, named after the town in Germany that houses the acclaimed 275-year-old Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. The two orchestras kicked off a partnership last year, which includes musician exchanges, shared performances, and the touring of both orchestras in their respective home countries – all under the guidance of Andris Nelsons, the music director for both groups. Jim Braude was joined by Andris Nelsons, music director of the BSO and of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.

Nelsons regards the Symphony No. 3 as the symphony in which Bruckner truly established his own language: “Its premiere in Vienna was a disaster, and Bruckner suffered a lot because of it. Yet in many ways he was ahead of his time and much misunderstood.”

Last weekend, after having conducted the first half of the evening’s repertoire, Andris performed a trumpet solo with the BSO at John Williams’ Film Night – “Malice Toward None” from the film “Lincoln”. Conductor was John Williams (who also composed the score).

Andris Nelsons & Boston Symphony Orchestra - Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5

The Gewandhausorchester is the oldest civic symphony orchestra in the world. The enterprise was founded in 1743 by a group of 16 musical philanthropists - representatives of the nobility as well as regular citizens - forming a concert society by the name of Das Große Concert. On taking residence in the trading house of the city's textile merchants (the "Gewandhaus") in 1781, the ensemble assumed the name "Gewandhausorchester".
