The Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood

This July, Andris Nelsons conducts a series of concerts at Tanglewood, featuring the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, and esteemed soloists. Tanglewood has been the summer home of the BSO since 1937.

The series begins on July 5, where the BSO will play an all-Rachmaninoff program, featuring the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 3 (with pianist Daniil Trifonov) and his Symphonic Dances. On July 6, Nelsons conducts the BSO in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and Piano Concerto No. 3, with pianist Yefim Bronfman acting as soloist. On July 7, Nelsons leads the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra in Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, with the TMC Conducting Fellows leading pieces by Smetana.

Nelsons leads the BSO on July 11 in A Theatrical Concert for Orchestra with Actors, featuring music from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet and text by Shakespeare (in a special adaptation commissioned by the Royal Albert Hall). The program is directed by Bill Barclay and features actors Kelley Curran as Juliet, James Udom as Romeo, Nigel Gore as Capulet, Robert Walsh as Friar and Nurse, Caleb Mayo as Mercutio, and Carman Lacivita as Tybalt. On July 12, pianist Seong-Jin Cho joins the BSO for Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G and Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. The concert will also feature two of  Debussy’s most famous works, Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune and La Mer.

Puccini’s Tosca comes to the Koussevitzky Music Shed on July 19. Nelsons leads an all-star cast, featuring Kristine Opolais, as Tosca, Seok Jong Baek as Cavaradossi, Bryn Terfel as Scarpia, and Morris Robinson as Angelotti, accompanied by the BSO. On July 20, Nelsons leads the TMC Orchestra in Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2, featuring pianist Yuja Wang.

In the last weekend of the festival, Nelsons conducts the BSO and violinist María Dueñas on July 25, in Bach’s J.S. Air from Orchestral Suite No. 3, Mahler’s Adagio from Symphony No. 10, and two works by Mendelssohn: his Violin Concerto and the concert overture Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage. The program on July 26 features the world premiere of John Williams’ Piano Concerto, featuring pianist Emanuel Ax, and Mahler’s Symphony No. On July 27, pianist Lang Lang joins Nelsons and the BSO for Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2, with the orchestra also playing Gabriela Ortiz’s La Calaca and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, Pastoral.
