All-Strauss program with Yuja Wang and the Gewandhausorchester
On June 25 and 27, Andris Nelsons returns to Leipzig for performances with the Gewandhausorchester and superstar pianist Yuja Wang, marking the orchestra’s first performances with an audience since lockdown. The all-Strauss program will begin with his tone poem Don Juan, inspired by the poem of the same name by Nikolaus Lenau, which takes on themes of love and conquest.
Strauss‘ Burleske in D minor follows, featuring Yuja Wang as soloist. This fiendishly complex and virtuosic work is an homage to Brahms’s B flat major Piano Concerto. Concluding the program is Strauss‘ rarely heard suite from the ballet Schlagobers, which the Gewandhausorchester premiered in 1932 under Bruno Walter.
