Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra announce the 2018-19 season

The upcoming season of the BSO will be Maestro Nelsons’ fifth as Music Director, and includes a rich variety of music, with fourteen programmes to be conducted by him. Concerts include:

September 2-17, 2018 – European tour to London, Vienna, Lucerne, Paris, Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, and Amsterdam (details TBA)

October 25, 26, 27 & 30, 2018 – Maija Einfeld’s Lux Aeterna & Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection with soprano Erin Morley and mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink

November 1, 3 & 6, 2018 – Haydn’s Symphony No. 93; American premiere of the BSO’s co-commission by Mark-Anthony Turnage – Remembering: In Memoriam Evan Scofield; and Elgar’s Enigma Variations (On November 2 a family-friendly „Casual Friday“ concert will be presented featuring the Haydn & Elgar works)

November 8, 9, 10 & 13, 2018 – Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1; American premiere of the BSO’s co-commission by Andris Dzenītis – Māra; and Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, Act II

November 15, 16 & 17, 2018 – HK Gruber’s Aerial for trumpet and orchestra with soloist Håkan Hardenberger & Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 (This programme will also be featured on November 19 at New York’s Carnegie Hall)

November 23, 24 & 27, 2018 – All-Beethoven programme including the composer’s Symphonies Nos. 4 & 5

November 29 & 30 and December 1, 2018 – Leipzig Week in Boston with J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio featuring soprano Carolyn Sampson, mezzo-soprano Christine Rice, tenor Sebastian Kohlhepp, and baritone Andrè Schuen

February 7, 8, 9 & 12, 2019 – Wilson’s Lumina; Symanowski’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with soloist Lisa Batiashvilli; and Copland’s Symphony No. 3

February 14, 15 & 16, 2019 – Schumann’s Piano Concerto with pianist Yuja Wang & Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9

February 21 & 23, 2019 – Boulanger’s D’un Soir triste; Debussy’s Nocturnes; and Puccini’s Suor Angelica with soprano Kristine Opolais and mezzo-soprano Violeta Urmana (On February 22 a „Casual Friday“ concert will be presented featuring the Haydn & Elgar works along with Britten’s Friday Afternoons)

February 28 and March 1 & 2, 2019 – Dvořák’s Stabat Mater with soprano Kristine Opolais, mezzo-soprano Violeta Urmana, tenor Dmytro Popov, and bass Ain Anger

March 14, 15 & 16, 2019 – All-Strauss programme featuring the Sextet, Moonlight Music, and Closing scene from Capriccio with soprano Renée Fleming Also sprach Zarathustra (These works will also be performed on March 19 at Carnegie Hall)

April 25, 26, 27 & 30, 2019 – Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with pianist Daniil Trifonov & Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 15

May 2, 3 & 4, 2019 – Strauss‘ Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks; world premiere of BSO co-commission Sebastian Currier’s Aether for violin and orchestra with soloist Baiba Skride; Stravinsky’s Petruschka

Nelsons’ programming of Shostakovich’s first and last symphonies, Nos. 1 and 15 in the 2018-19 season is featured as part of the BSO’s ongoing Grammy award-winning Shostakovich cycle for Deutsche Grammophon.
