Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 with The Boston Symphony Orchestra
On September 24, 25, and 26, Andris Nelsons leads the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Mahler’s Symphony No. 7, alongside the world premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina and Elena Firsova’s Prologue.
The performances mark a significant milestone for Nelsons, as the Seventh is the only Mahler symphony he has yet to conduct with the BSO.
Regarded as one of the preeminent composers of our era, the Russian-born Sofia Gubaidulina infuses her intricate, penetrating music with profound spirituality. A frequent and cherished collaborator of both the BSO and Nelsons, she was composing Prologue—a joint co-commission with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig—at the time of her passing. Eminent composer Elena Firsova completed the work for its posthumous performance. Paired with this premiere, Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 unfolds as an intense orchestral journey filled with nocturnal mystery and sardonic wit, journeying from darkness into blazing triumph.
