‘Die tote Stadt’ with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Lyric Opera

On January 30 and February 1, Andris Nelsons leads Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s haunting and romantic meditation on grief, Die tote Stadt, a collaboration between the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where Nelsons is Music Director, and Boston Lyric Opera.

Premiering in 1920, Die tote Stadt’s story of struggling with the memory of a lost loved one undoubtedly resonated with audiences still traumatized by the horrors of World War I. While it is now rarely performed, Die tote Stadt was one of the biggest operatic successes of the era.

Nelsons leads a stellar cast in this concert production, including Christine Goerke as Marietta, Brandon Jovanovich as Paul, Elisa Sunshine as Juliette, Amber Monroe as Lucienne, Karen Cargill as Brigitte, Joshua Sanders as Victorin, Neal Ferreira as Gaston, Terrence Chin-Loy as Graf Albert, and Elliot Madore as Frank/Fritz. The Tanglewood Festival Chorus and Boys of the St. Paul’s Choir School sing alongside the Boston Lyric Opera chorus.
