Einfelde and Mahler with Boston Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood Festival Chorus

Andris Nelsons returns to the Boston Symphony Orchestra for six weeks of innovative concerts, kicking off his 2018-2019 season as musical director.

Beginning on October 25-30, Nelsons conducts Mahler’s apocalyptic second symphony (Resurrection Symphony), featuring soprano Ying Fang and mezzo soprano Bernarda Fink, along with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Following this all-encompassing piece is the first of two Latvian works performed by the BSO this season, to mark the centenary of the country’s independence. Maija Einfelde’s Lux aeterna, for mixed chorus, will be led by James Burton, the conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. On October 27, the performance will be broadcasted live at 8 pm and on Monday November 5 at 8 pm via WCRB.

WBUR acclaimed Nelsons crisp rendition of Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony with the BSO in 2017:

“He never takes a measure off; the downbeat is never far away. A work like this crescendos dozens of times, filled with emotional peaks and valleys. And none of it is hazy, or uncertain. Nelsons travels through it all intently, like a kid marveling at a drive through the Alps.”
